September 16, 2019

What a month!  This month we broke ground to construct the Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers.  The total cost of this facility is $148MM and we are getting close to securing all the funding.  To date, we are grateful to have received $105MM in pledged support from donations and we also received a revenue bond in the amount of $40MM from our 2019 Utah State Legislature.  All of these funding commitments have been received in the past 14 months – a record for our foundation!  THANK YOU.

The expansion of our cancer campus is needed because we are currently serving patients at 100% of our capacity in both inpatient and outpatient areas.  The new addition will be 8-stories and 220,000 sq. ft and will include

  • 48 additional private inpatient rooms
  • a floor dedicated to women’s cancers
  • a new endoscopy center
  • increased services for blood and marrow transplant patients
  • an expansion of the HCI Wellness and Integrative Health Center

Lead donors to this project are the Spencer and Kristen Kirk family, Huntsman Foundation, Karen and Scott Smith, Sigma Chi International Fraternity, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and dōTERRA International. The state of Utah approved a revenue bond to provide the remaining financing for this project.  The project will be completed and open to patients in fall 2022.

This month also marked a celebration of 20 loyal donors at our annual gala.  Donors recognized included Bernice Callahan, Steven and Mary Morris, Alexandra Eframo, Neva Lewis, and Mark and Jean Lau.  It is extraordinary that Huntsman Cancer has been supported by more than 1 million donors since our founding.  And this special group of loyalty donors stand out for the number of times they have answered the call to give over two decades.  Here are the statistics:

  • 55 donors have given more than 100 times;
  • 86 have given more than 75 times;
  • 258 have given more than 50 times; and
  • 895 have given more than 30 times.

Also, at our gala, the community stepped forward and doubled the funds raised from just one year ago.  In a raucous challenge between University of Utah men’s basketball coach Larry Krystowiak, Peter Huntsman, Scott and Karen Smith, Kem and Carolyn Gardner, Dick Marriott, Markie Huntsman, and many others, $1.4MM was raised in just minutes.  That combined with sponsorships brought this year’s gala total to more than $2MM raised for cancer research.  As important, guests thoroughly enjoyed an evening celebrating the great research strides outlined by HCI CEO Dr. Mary Beckerle.  Her remarks give us all a reason to hope.

Thank you for helping us realize an unforgettable list of achievements in September 2019.  Our founder is proud and grateful.  And I believe he was with us along the way.
