The second cancer conference for the Hispanic/Latino Community of Utah, Salud Para Mí, Es Salud Para Mi Familia 2018, took place Saturday, June 16, at Salt Lake Community College. Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and Alliance Community Services continued their partnership to organize and host the event. An estimated 251 community members attended.

The conference offers a space for the Hispanic/Latino community of Utah to receive screenings with local health care providers, get reliable health information, and learn about cancer screening and prevention. This year the University of Utah Wellness Bus provided glucose, blood pressure, and BMI screenings. A variety of other general health screenings were available to the public. Workshops and presenters included the following:

  • Cancer Survivorship by Gabriela Portugal-Bouza, MD
  • Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer by Susana Agüero Alba, CHW, Margarita Munoz, CHW, and Pilar Gutiérrez, CHW
  • Nutrition and Physical Activity by Cecilia Figueroa, CHW, and Wendy Cordoba, CHW
  • Community Resources by various organizations
  • Colon Cancer by Jennyffer Morales, M.Phil.
  • Mental Health by Karla Arroyo, LCSW
  • Liver Cancer by Ivan R. Zendejas, MD, Intermountain Medical Center

Community Health Workers (CHWs) at the event had the chance to take part in the Secondary Health Effects of Cancer Treatment workshop presented by Ana Maria Lopez, MD, MPH, FACP. Twenty-six CHWs attended and earned a certificate of completion from the University of Utah and HCI. As keynote speaker and key event organizer, Dr. Lopez talked about cancer risk and the importance of prevention through healthy lifestyle choices that reduce cancer risk.

The event’s 33 community partners provided information and a range of complimentary health services, including visual acuity screening, oral cancer screening, and glucose readings. Attendees received referrals for follow-up care if necessary. Healthy meals, raffles prizes, and performances by Mariachi Águilas de la Esperanza made this event entertaining as well as informative.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible, including Triunfadoras Cancer Support Group.
