When Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) patients are discharged from the hospital, they receive a gift bag put together by Volunteer Services and handed out by Environmental Services.

“The gift bags tend to have items like journals, sleep masks, knit hats, lotion, or lip balm—it all depends on what our wonderful community donates for our patients,” says Blanca Raphael, Volunteer Services coordinator.

During the HCI Community Open House, Volunteer Services set out blank bookmarks that open house guests could sign with a note to patients. The bookmarks have been added to the inpatient gift bags.

“I love that every comfort item that goes into this inpatient gift bag is from our community,” says Blanca. “With these bookmarks, that same wonderful giving community is adding a ‘note of hope’ to our patients, letting them know they are being supported throughout their battle.”
