Faculty Appointments

Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is a world-renowned research organization that is part of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. HCI is composed of nearly 150 Cancer Center members from the faculty of University of Utah (U of U) departments, schools, and colleges.

HCI is led by CEO and Director Mary Beckerle, PhD. Cancer Center members are selected by Dr. Beckerle and HCI's Research Leadership Council based on research interests, funding, and/or clinical practice. Dr. Beckerle is a voting member of the U of U School of Medicine chairs, but unlike department chairs, HCI's CEO and Director does not have appointment authority for new U of U faculty.

However, the Cancer Center frequently initiates searches for faculty who meet its programmatic needs. In these cases, a U of U departmental appointment is negotiated as the search develops and the candidates' qualifications are reviewed. Any potential appointee must be approved by the appropriate department's faculty and chair prior to a letter of offer.

In cases where faculty searches are initiated by a U of U department, the department chair may approach HCI (the Cancer Center) for financial or space resources if the recruitment meets a programmatic need of HCI. In either case, HCI's CEO and Director signs any letter of offer that commits Cancer Center resources to the recruitment package.
