Hospital patients spend a lot of time in bed, which is why doctors prescribe certain devices or activities to prevent complications.
- SCD – To promote circulation and prevent blood clots, patients may need to wear special compression stockings called sequential compression devices, or SCDs.
- I-S – Some patients may need to use a device called an incentive spirometer, or an I-S. This helps inflate the lungs and reduce the risk of complications such as pneumonia.
