Rowing (also called sculling) provides a low-impact, full-body workout. It is popular among patients undergoing cancer treatment and people in remission.
Through the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) Linda B. and Robert B. Wiggins Wellness-Survivorship Center, the HCI Rowing Program takes place at the Great Salt Lake, where rowing is peaceful
on a large body of water surrounded by scenic mountains and islands. The boats are stored by the Great Salt Lake Rowing (GSLR) Club at the Great Salt Lake Marina. GSLR is a community rowing association that welcomes cancer survivors in their promotion of rowing for recreational and competitive activities.
For almost a decade, Nicole Cavallaro has taught and coached cancer survivors to row. Any patient cleared through his or her provider is welcome to join this rewarding activity. The season begins in spring and ends in autumn. Please contact the Wellness-Survivorship Center for information.
| The Jordanelle Reservoir was the site of the Wasatch Mountain Head Race, October 13, 2012. This year, because of low waters, the race start point was southeast of the Jordanelle State Park boat launch site. The race course started at the Gates of Jordan and looped through the Rock Cliff finger to finish a 5K course back at the Gates of Jordan. There were two Huntsman rowing teams, a mixed-masters double (Nicole Cavallaro and Joe Inman; 21.43 minutes) and a mixed-masters quad (Tammy Wambeam, Doug Brewster, Joann Cloud, Lisa Cannon-Albright, and coach/coxswain Nicole Cavallaro). All members of the Quad were survivors. They finished in 27.00 minutes. Another Huntsman cancer survivor, Earl Zagrodnik, competed for the GSLR team in the mixed masters double competition and finished in 25.51 minutes. |
