Much of what is known about the genetics of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer genetics began with research on rare inherited colorectal cancers. Information about common inherited risk has come from family studies. These familial studies have already led to improvements in cancer prevention for these families and for the population in general.

Research on inherited colorectal cancers Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) has opened the doors to studies of increased familial risk for other GI cancers. Increased risk for other GI cancers such as pancreas cancer can be related to the same genetic mutations responsible for colorectal cancers.
