State Recognition as Employer of the Year
The Facilities Department at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) has a reputation for excellence in maintaining the building's infrastructure and fixing problems as soon as they arise. The department also works to modify the building's facilities as necessary—a task that can require extra effort and creativity. When HCI scientist David Gillespie, PhD, returned to work after a snowboarding accident that put him in a wheelchair, the Facilities Department worked with him closely to find the unique obstacles he would face in the lab and to develop solutions. The department's efforts led to the state of Utah acknowledging HCI with a Golden Key Employer of the Year award, given to Utah organizations for outstanding contributions and practices that improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

At the Golden Key Awards ceremony, Mary Beckerle, HCI's CEO and Director, said, "Our ability to make a difference completely depends on the people we have working at HCI. This award demonstrates our inclusiveness of all people and our commitment to excellence in all we do."
National Award for Website Design
The year 2011 saw an expanded commitment to excellence in communicating to patients and the public through the HCI website. In a major effort to improve content, look, and navigation, HCI's Office of Communications undertook a complete website redesign. This resulted in the website winning two eHealthcare Leadership Awards, which recognize the very best websites of health care organizations and companies across the country. The site received a Silver Award for health content and a Distinction for best overall site. The winners were recognized during a special presentation at the Fifteenth Annual Healthcare Internet Conference in Orlando, Florida.
